In preparing for our Revelation sermon series, I have found and learned from a number of wonderful teachers. Many of you have asked me for resource recommendations for your own personal use to go deeper into this book of the Bible. For today’s e-news, I have put together a short list that offers different levels of accessibility and media for your own personal study.
Video
I recommend starting with The Bible Project. Their scholarship is excellent and these two, 10-minute videos give a fantastic overview for all of Revelation. Part 1 covers Rev 1-11 and part 2 completes the series with Rev 12-22. They also have a pictorial overview you can print out and keep before you (I have it hanging in my office!).
Book
See the Strange: The Gospel According to Revelation is the most accessible book I found. The writing is light and easy to read but the scholarship is quite deep.
Reversed Thunder: The Revelation of John and the Praying Imaginationrecognizes Revelation is a pastor’s letter to seven churches. Eugene Peterson, himself writing in the thick of his own career as a pastor, picks up on key themes and motifs throughout the letter helping us to expand our faith imagination.
The Theology of the Book of Revelation might be the definitive work to read. It’s the book most often cited by other books on Revelation. At less than 200 pages, this is an incredible pound-for-pound resource. The writing is technical but it’s brief enough that many will be up for the challenge.
Revelation Study Book by She Reads Truth is a very helpful study guide. In preparing for this sermon series I found it to be immensely helpful in connecting the large themes of Revelation to practical, everyday life.
