What is a silent Retreat?
A silent retreat is a weekend set apart to be present to God in stillness. By removing ourselves from the noise, distractions, and demands of life, we open our hearts to God with greater calmness and hear Him with greater clarity. We emerge from silence better equipped to love and serve those around us. Men and women welcome.
What happens at a silent retreat?
The retreat will begin at 6:00pm on Friday evening with dinner (we’ll talk with one another, decompress from the week, and prepare to enter into silence). The retreat ends on Sunday at noon with lunch (we’ll talk with one another, celebrate what the Lord has done, and prepare to re-enter the world). You must attend the entire time (no Saturday arrivals or departures before we break silence on Sunday).
During the retreat we follow the “hours” prayers and gather throughout the day for a liturgy that has been used since the early days of the Christian church (evening prayer, morning prayer, midday prayer, and vespers). Each of these prayer times is relatively brief (10-20 minutes). You also will be given reflection exercises to use between group prayer times. These exercises are optional, but are meant to help you move through the silence into a deep encounter with the Lord.
Where are we staying?
Cedarbrake Retreat Center is a peaceful and beautiful place located about an hour north of Austin. There’s a paved walking trail around the retreat complex, lots of places to sit outside and reflect, a beautiful chapel, and some unique places and treasures that you’ll discover over the weekend.
How do I sign up?
Space for the retreat is limited to 20 participants. Please contact the church office (email@example.com) as soon as possible to sign up!
How much does the retreat cost?
The cost for the weekend is $180 for a private room and $150 for a shared room and six home-cooked meals. Please note that we do not have a budget for scholarships for this retreat but if you would like to help scholarship someone else, please let us know.
Prayer from CELTIC DAILY PRAYER:
Leave me alone with God
as much as may be
As the tide draws the waters
close in upon the shore,
make me an island, set apart,
alone with You, God
holy to You
Then with the turning of the tide,
prepare me to carry Your presence
to the busy world beyond,
the world that rushes in on me,
till the waters come again
and fold me back to you
