Dear Christ Church,
What if every church and home took a hyper-local interest in the flourishing of their immediate vicinity, the place where they live? What if we all prayed and acted toward the goal that God’s kingdom come and will be done right here, in this little place on earth, as it is in heaven? Our world would be a different place. That’s our hope as the people of Christ Church, that we “love where we live.” Let me tell you about three ways we are doing so this summer!
Encountering Homelessness. Last week we held a truly outstanding event to learn and discuss homelessness in Austin, and what we can do about it. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to “love our neighbor”; many of our church neighbors are people experiencing homelessness. I cannot imagine a better way to learn about this issue, in the context of Austin in particular, then to take time to read this blog post by Fr. Matt, which includes a recording of the evening if you’d like to listen.
Love Where We Live + Youth. Next week twenty members of our youth group are going to spend three days of intensive discipleship, community, service, and worship around the theme “Love Where We Live.” Together, they will take steps deeper into loving God, others, our city, and His creation. Join us in prayer for their time together, that they grow in love for Jesus and his ways. We’ll get to hear a report in Sunday worship on August 22nd!
Zavala Elementary Gift Baskets. Our friends and neighbors at Communities in Schools (CIS) and Zavala Elementary need gift baskets donated for their back to school efforts! We need 15 baskets to deliver to our friends. Baskets need to be dropped off at Christ Church (front desk of the office) no later than Tuesday, Aug 17. Rally your friends, family, or small group to put a basket together! You can register here.
In case you missed, you can read our update on Sunday Worship Health Protocols right here. And join us (whether live stream or in person) for an Instructed Eucharist this Sunday, where I teach through the powerful meaning and design of our liturgy!
P.S. We’ve added a new feature to our enews! Each month we are now going to spotlight one of our global mission partners in the middle of this email. We want you to stay abreast of how you, your giving, and our prayer and support are partnering with God’s global purposes. We’d also love for you to take a moment upon reading them to intercede for our supported missionaries and their work!
