Holy Week Plot Twists

Rev. Cliff WarnerCliffNotes

Dear Christ Church Friends,

I have a lot to tell you about this week. Hang in there with me!

The church year walks us through the whole life and work of Jesus, from the Annunciation to the expectation of his return. There is only one week, however, in which we slow down to real time and walk daily with Jesus in his footsteps. It begins this Sunday, Palm Sunday, the doorway to Holy Week.

All services prior to Easter Sunday will be offered both onsite (indoors and courtyard!) and online. Right here you can find all times and details, as well as gorgeous page full of Holy Week resources to help you walk with Jesus this week.

This Holy Week we have a few plot twists that pull us into the story.

Palm Sunday we will begin our procession, as usual, from the basketball court, winding our way into the sanctuary, where we will read aloud the entire passion narrative according to St. Mark. Here’s the Palm Sunday twist: we’ll have the privilege of hearing from special guest, the Rev. Jake Stum, Global Director of the Anglican Relief and Development Fund.

Maundy Thursday plunges us into the evening in which Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, instituted the Lord’s Supper, and was betrayed (which is dramatically conveyed through our stripping of the altar at the end of our service). Here’s the Maundy Thursday twist: we will hear theologian and 2019 Christ Church Parish Retreat speaker, Dr. Julie Canlis, reflect on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper for the Church before we turn to the table ourselves for Holy Eucharist.

Next, join us for our Good Friday service and invite a guest to one of the most moving and, by far, the most popular service of the whole church year. This is a truly great opportunity to invite a friend who does not know Jesus to join either onsite or online.

And then for two Easter Sunday twists; first, we’ll celebrate the resurrection of our Lord beginning with a Sunrise Service at 7am in “The Backyard” at 112 Medina St. This will be followed by 9am and 11am indoor services. And second, we will have a flowering cross in the courtyard, a cross covered with wire mesh that gets progressively filled throughout the day with your fresh cut flowers, until it’s in full bloom . . . the instrument of death transformed into colorful vitality. Bring some flowers!
