Inward and Outward

Rev. Cliff WarnerCliffNotes, Communications, Coronavirus

Dear Christ Church,

You are so beautifully alive and active and, even while sheltering-in-place, not only zooming into community with each other, but also reaching out in loving service to others. For example, when we did the drive-thru consecrations we planned for priests to also personally deliver consecrated elements to some of our homebound parishioners. As it turned out, you had already thought of this yourself! Parishioners who came through the drive-thru had brought extra elements for consecration, and then delivered them to all our homebound brothers and sisters. I love the way you love!

Check out our “Announcements” below . . . but first let’s keep lifting our eyes to the needs of others. Here are some additional ways to serve the city, each other, and keep loving those in need around us:

Our neighborhood homeless friends. Many of you have noticed the growing population of people experiencing homelessness just half a block south of our building near the Terrazas library. That has grown in recent months to become a tent city, and in these past few weeks of stay-at-home orders it has grown even more. We spoke this week with Mark and Cindy Smith who run the Austin Baptist Chapel Angel House Soup Kitchen at 908 E. Cesar Chavez, and they said they are passing out 400–500 to-go sack breakfasts and lunches every day (up from 300–400 meals in their dining room before the quarantine). We asked how Christ Church could pitch in to help, and they told us of two particular needs . . . read here for more.

An Eastside Food Drive. Mission Possible (our ministry partner for Church Under the Bridge) is doing a non-perishable food drive on Saturday, May 2nd, from 9:30–11:30am. The foods donated will be used as part of their program to bring food to the elderly and homebound in our city (which is considered an essential service during stay-at-home order).⁣ See here for details.

Blood Drive to Bolster Low Supplies. We’re hosting two blood drives at Christ Church on Sunday, April 26th and May 3rd and all the spots are already full! Stay tuned for more opportunities in the future.

Austin 2:44 CARES Fund. This is a local effort to raise and disburse one million dollars to area churches in need, for benevolence and critical operations in their own congregations. The Christ Church Vestry gave $30,000 out of our own cash reserves to aid our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Needs within Our Own Parish Family. We know that some of you are feeling significant financial stress. If you are having trouble paying the bills, please let us know. We have a Benevolence Fund for this very purpose, the generosity and love of your fellow parishioners have provided some funds to help during times like this. Please let one of the clergy know of your need, or click the “I have a need” button on our Coronavirus Community Update page.
