Dear Christ Church Friends,
It gives me great joy to announce, and invite you to attend, the ordination of Eric Stumberg to the Sacred Order of Deacons on Saturday, February 29th, here at Christ Church!
Eric and Keri have been members of Christ Church for ten years, where he has served in many capacities, from Alpha to pre-marital counseling to chalice, small group leadership, and Fuller Formation Groups, just to name a few. He has been especially catalytic in our efforts to form whole-life disciples, who see our vocation, culture-making, and service of the common good as part of our mission. Eric, a business owner himself, started our Faith & Business lunch, served on our “Faith &” Team, and is passionate about seeing other churches in our diocese and city also integrate this kind of vocation-as-mission perspective into their discipleship practices.
Eric, in sum, is a bridge-builder between the church and the world, which is precisely the call of a deacon. Historically speaking, deacons are most often a bridge of compassion for the needs of the sick, the lonely, and the oppressed. Eric clearly has this compassion and call, lived out with integrity in both seen and unseen ways. It is exciting for us at Christ Church to see Eric’s unique ability to build an additional, oft-neglected, bridge—the one between the church and the world of vocation and work. Check out this definition of the Anglican diaconate, a wonderful way of describing the vocation of a deacon in terms of the places of their service.
