Spiritual Theology Class

Rev. Cliff WarnerCliffNotes, Frontpage News

Dear Christ Church,

“If you’re a Christian you’re just a shadow of your future self.” My first thought upon reading these words of N. T. Wright is “Thank God!” (literally). That means I’m not stuck in the me I know all too well. We are all, with “unveiled face,” being transformed into the image of God from one degree of glory to another (2 Cor. 3:18). This is our first vocation.

I want to invite you to a Christ Church class that’s back after three years, “Spiritual Theology” taught by Christine Warner. This class will help us in our calling to pursue holiness and wholeness in Christ. The process of formation requires that we know who we are and who God is within his Great Story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. The world of salvation is wide, expansive, full of riches, and teeming with life. The Spiritual Theology class will take you into that world, and into that story, with transformative effect.

If you’ve come to Christ Church in recent months or years and don’t know much about Christine, I can help (full disclosure: she is my amazing wife!). Christine brings to this class, and this topic, a rich perspective informed by a cross-cultural upbringing, college studies in philosophy and Latin American studies, a graduate degree in Spiritual Theology, and three decades of ministry.

Christine currently serves as the founder and director of Lumen Center for Mission and Spirituality, and the founding director of the Matthew 25 Initiative, our denominational effort to advance work among vulnerable, marginalized, or under-resourced communities in North America. She last taught the Spiritual Theology class at Christ Church in 2017, the year before she was in a near-fatal accident with a long hospitalization and (still ongoing) recovery. This experience has shifted and sharpened her perspective on the Christian life, and therefore aspects of this refreshed class. The class starts in three weeks! See here for more information on the Spiritual Theology class, and how to register.

P.S. On another note, if you are interested in learning about our summer Guatemala mission trips or spring Border Encounters, find someone in a red t-shirt in the courtyard after worship this Sunday!
