Dear Christ Church,
This week these lyrics have been floating through my days and thoughts: “Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.“
We have a weekend chock-full of things to celebrate, each one of them moments in which we cry out, “come, Holy Spirit.”
This Sunday we have confirmations in both services, which culminates in a moment when the Bishop lays his hands on the confirmand and says, “Strengthen, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit; empower them for your service; and sustain them all the days of their life. Amen.” Come, Holy Spirit.
Tomorrow we will have an ordination service at 1pm for Brian Wallace, in which the Bishop lays hands on the candidate for priesthood and says, “Therefore, Father, through Jesus Christ your Son, give your Holy Spirit to Brian; fill him with grace and power, and make him a priest in your Church.” Come, Holy Spirit.
This Sunday we will also welcome the Rev. Dr. Bill Walker on staff as our new Director of Vocation. And we will celebrate the ministry of women who have poured themselves out in nurturing, formational, life-giving love as mothers. And we continue our Holy Spirit sermon series this Sunday with Bishop Zimmerman preaching on the gifts of the Spirit. In case you’re wondering, the Rt. Rev. Todd Hunter is still our Bishop, but Bp. Zimmerman has kindly agreed to help our bishop with special services because of the large size of our diocese. Come, Holy Spirit!
Lastly, in case you missed it, I wrote a letter here last week explaining my summer plans, and some additional time I’ll be taking to work on a Doctor of Ministry program, returning our family to some rhythms after the past unusual year, and gearing up for the year ahead. If you are keeping up with Christine’s recovery, there is a new post on the blog.
Come, Holy Spirit!
