Dear Christ Church,
This Sunday we will be active witnesses to two different sacramental acts that both mark us in terms of identity and calling, a people who belong to each other and are called to bear God’s image in the world. Bishop Todd Hunter is joining us to celebrate Confirmations and Matt Dampier’s Ordination to the Priesthood. It is going to be an incredibly special morning to share together!
We will. Two words that take us from being just mere witnesses to active, participatory witnesses. Two words that we robustly declare as a way to say, “We’re in this together. We belong to each other.”
At the 9am service, nine members of our community will publicly confess their faith in Jesus and receive the laying on of hands and prayers for “the Holy Spirit to fill them more and more for their ministry in the church and in the world.” It’s also a moment we will welcome them as official members of the Anglican church. After hearing these nine brothers and sisters affirm their commitment to follow Christ, it will be asked of us, “Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?” We will.
At the 11am service, Matt Dampier will be ordained into the Order of Priests. It’s been three months since Matt arrived on Texas soil to begin his role as our Associate Rector, a role that he has embraced wholeheartedly and vibrantly. We are incredibly thankful for his skillful, servant-hearted leadership and joyful presence. And we’re eager to welcome Lexie, Lucy, and Charlie this Sunday! Together with them, we will witness Matt give himself wholly to the calling of being a priest, and promise to be faithfully diligent to teach according to the Scriptures; to pray and study the Word of God; to frame and fashion his life and that of his family according to the doctrine of Christ; to be at peace among all Christians; and to faithfully banish all erroneous and strange doctrines…just to name a few! Standing with him, as witnesses of these vows and as the people of God who belong to each other, it will be asked of us, “Will you uphold him in his ministry?” We will.
Christ Church, we look forward to worshiping with you on Sunday as we witness the sacramental acts of Confirmation and Ordination! Our community will celebrate together the vows made before our awesome God, and with one voice, we’ll robustly show our affirmation and support by declaring, We will!
