Dear Christ Church,
Pentecost is this Sunday! It is the day we observe and give thanks for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all God’s people. In the wonder of the third Person of our Triune God, we are enlightened to believe and trust Jesus; enabled to whole-heartedly turn away from our sin and self-centeredness; given a Comforter and Counselor to accompany us; and empowered for godliness and mission. Pentecost also marks the outpouring of his Spirit at the birth of God’s global Church, wherefore one day a great multitude from every tribe, tongue and nation will cry out with loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Malcolm Guite wrote seventy sonnets for the Christian year, all compiled in his book Sounding the Seasons. He is a poet, Anglican priest, and singer-songwriter in Cambridge, England. This one is “Pentecost”:
Today we feel the wind beneath our wings,
Today the hidden fountain flows and plays,
Today the church draws breath at last and sings,
As every flame becomes a tongue of praise.
This is the feast of Fire, Air and Water,
Poured out and breathed and kindled into Earth.
The Earth herself awakens to her maker,
Translated out of death and into birth.
The right words come today in their right order
And every word spells freedom and release.
Today the gospel crosses every border,
All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace.
Today the lost are found in translation,
Whose mother-tongue is love, in every nation
We are a Resurrection people, indwelt by the Spirit of God himself! As we prepare to worship this Sunday, let’s boldly ask him for the presence and power of the Holy Spirit to move in our lives, in Christ Church, in our new downtown Eastside neighborhood, the city of Austin, and in the world, for the sake of others and His renown.
Kyrie Eleison (Come, Holy Spirit)!
