Tongues of Fire?

Dear Christ Church,

This Sunday is Pentecost, when we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room, after Jesus ascended to the Father. The Holy Spirit is God’s promised empowering presence in our life and community. As we prepare to encounter the living God this Sunday, these verses and Scripture might help us prepare our hearts:

“I don’t want my life to be explainable without the Holy Spirit. I want people to look at my life and know that I couldn’t be doing this by my own power.” —Francis Chan

“The key to life in the Spirit for some is to spend much more quiet time in thanksgiving and praise for what God has done—and is doing, and promises to do—and less time on introspection, focused on your failure to match up to the law.” —Gordon Fee

God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. —Rom. 5:5-6

There is a distinction between signs and wonders and the gift of healing. Signs and wonders are an outpouring of miracles specifically connected with revival and the proclamation of the gospel. The gift of healing is given to the church for its edification (1 Cor 12:7) and is not necessarily connected with revival or an abundance of miracles. —Jack Deere

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. —1 Cor. 12:13
