Today’s CliffNotes is a guest post by Drew Smith, Pastoral Assistant at Christ Church.
Dear Christ Church,
Can I let you in on a ministry trade secret?
One key step you’d love to see everyone in your ministry take is from participation to ownership. We want you to see yourself not just as someone who is served by Christ Church but as someone who IS Christ Church. Because that’s when you’re really going to thrive!
I like to compare it to learning how to drive. When I was kid, I was an oblivious passenger. I didn’t pay any attention to where we were going or how we were getting there. I just showed up for the ride. But after I learned how to drive, it changed how I even ride in a car as a passenger. Now I notice when a pedestrian looks like they might step out in front of us. I notice when traffic is coming to an abrupt halt. I’m reflexively attentive and ready to act if it’s called on.
That’s what it’s like to take ownership of Christ Church. We begin to see the flaws are our flaws that we can help address. The beauties are our strengths, and together we thank God for them.
Speaking of the beauties of Christ Church, one that I appreciate is how much ownership we have! For a church our size, it’s amazing how many people I see who so identify with Christ Church that they reflexively serve and troubleshoot and cheer and cry and welcome. I believe that part of why we have a shared sense of ownership is because so many of us are active in the ministries of the church. Every Sunday morning, about 75 of us will volunteer in some capacity to help make our gathering time all that it can be. Phenomenal.
Are you new to Christ Church? Or maybe you’ve been coming but still feel “new”? Would you like to have a deeper sense of ownership? One great step you can take is to join a Sunday volunteering team. Our prayer is it will help knit you into the fabric of the church. You’ll have a special opportunity to express your devotion to Jesus. You’ll go deeper with people as you serve alongside them. And you’ll be formed to be more like Jesus.
Our new volunteering schedule starts in September, so now’s a great time to take a next step.
Step 1A: If you’re not currently volunteering on Sunday morning but would like to, fill out this form to let us know about your schedule and your interests so we can match you with a team.
Step 1B: If you are already volunteering on Sunday, please fill out this form to tell us about your schedule for this fall.
Step 2: Come to our Volunteer Orientation on Wed, Aug 17th at 7:30pm at 112 Medina St. While the orientation isn’t mandatory, you might miss out on some of the big picture stuff if you can’t be there and it’s a huge help for our team leaders to be able to train as many at the orientation as possible.
Grateful to serve alongside you,
