Dear Christ Church,
Jesus gave everything for us (think of all that he gave for a minute), demonstrating God’s extravagant grace. We respond with sacrificial generosity by giving of our gifts and abilities, our time and our money to God, His people and His work. We open our arms, our hearts and our homes in generous and sacrificial hospitality. This is what it means to be a generous people, a gospel people. On Sunday, Feb. 14th we will be making our annual pledge for God’s mission through Christ Church. Let’s listen together for God’s voice as he leads us to sacrificial generosity.
Lent is almost here! I would like to invite us, as a parish, “to the?observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance;?by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and? meditating on God’s holy Word” (BCP, Ash Wednesday service). Lent is not another thing on our to-do list, another “ought” of the Christian life. It is part of our rhythm in a life-long process of being shaped by the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ for the sake of others and for the glory of God. And it always points to the resurrection and reign of Jesus.
One powerful way for us to be shaped, not only individually but also collectively, is to read, pray and reflect on common material. This year please join me, the Christ Church leadership, and yourfellow parishioners aswe walk together through Forty Days of Decrease, by Alicia Britt Chole. Copies will be available for you at church on Sunday February 7th.
Finally, last week we had a staff retreat; this weekend we will have a Vestry retreat. Thank you for upholding our staff and Vestry in prayer as we seek to be faithful stewards, servants, and leaders of all that God has entrusted to Christ Church. Also, thank you for your continued prayers as we search for the next Associate Rector that God has for us. God is at work and the search is progressing well and with joy.
