Holy Week

Rev. Cliff WarnerCliffNotes

“For the things that crucify Christ and wreck the whole world are the common sins of every day–self-centredness, pride, apathy, cynicism, slackness, unkindness, every temptation put in another’s path, every wasted opportunity, every pitiful compromise of which we are ashamed – these are the nails and the spear-thrust and the cross. And will anyone deny, with Jesus hanging there, that sin is the critical enemy, the most dangerous insatiable thing in the world, and that they personally need to be forgiven?” These words of James Stewart bring me back from the abstractions of evil to the problem of me, to self-examination. I am a sinner, desperate for the mercy of God. Every day.

And thank God we have hope that such mercy will rain down upon us every single day, even moment by moment, because of the cross. This Sunday we begin our journey to the cross with Christ. Next week the church calendar slows down to real time . . . one week in our calendar, one week in the life of Jesus. Thursday to Sunday is called the Triduum, traditionally considered one single service. Join us for these special services coming in next week and beyond:

Palm Sunday–Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and a “readers’ theatre” of the passion narrative from one of the gospels. This Sunday at 9am and 11am.

Maundy Thursday–a service that focuses on Jesus’ last meal with his disciples, his institution of the Lord’s Supper and his washing of the disciples’ feet. Joint service at Hope Chapel, 7pm.

Good Friday–Reflections by seven individuals on Jesus’ “seven last words” from the cross. Joint service at Hope Chapel, 7pm.

Easter Sunday–Three services! 7:30am, 9am and 11am.

Our first evening service–April 12th at the Medina St. property, 5pm. We are looking for at least thirty people who will commit to being part of this service for several months to fill some volunteer roles and help us get it off the ground. Please contact the church office if you are interested.

Peace,

P.S. This Sunday we will announce our total pledges for Deep Roots, New Season. We had our first Vestry meeting in the new property last week! The Vestry, staff, and I also invite you to be praying with us over the next couple months of discernment and early planning for our church plant.
