Who is known for their excellence in giving? We celebrate those who write books or build impressive organizations; we download great sermons and recognize many forms of giftedness. But who is known for their excellence in giving?
Very few are known, not only because Scripture warns against publicizing our generosity, but also because the vast majority, and best examples, of excellence in giving would never make the news. Paul tells the Corinthians that they can all “excel in the grace of giving” (2 Cor. 8:7). All! . . .Every single person can excel in this grace, because the standard of excellence is based more on the amount of sacrifice than the amount of dollars. The rich and the poor are on a level playing field; we can all be known by God for our excellence in giving, our sacrificial generosity, our grateful response to Jesus Christ, who gave the most excellent gift: his very life upon the cross.
In a few weeks we’ll make financial pledges for the year, an opportunity at Christ Church to excel together in the grace of giving, for the sake of the gospel and the praise of his glory.
