The Coming

Rev. Cliff WarnerCliffNotes

Happy Thanksgiving and Blessed Advent! This Sunday is the first day of the year–the Christian year. The church calendar begins with the first Sunday of Advent, which means “the coming.” We remember that God in Christ came among us 2000 years ago, that he comes to us now by the Holy Spirit, and that he will come again as sovereign King of all creation.

During Advent, we are full of eager expectation, waiting and preparing for the coming King. As the liturgical colors change from green to purple, the color of royalty, we declare: “Come King Jesus. We watch and wait for you. We prepare our hearts for your coming. Open our eyes to your daily presence. Establish your reign upon the earth. Come quickly, we pray, to put this world to rights.”

Let me tell you about a few “Advent at Christ Church” items:

  • First, this Sunday we will introduce some beautiful liturgy booklets at the 9am service, designed and produced by some of the artists at Christ Church. There is a section included for use as an Advent devotional, which you can download here.
  • Next, December 5 is the Ceili and Men’s Chili Cook-off, an annual highlight!Immediately following the 11am service, we’ll have live Celtic music by the band Raising Jane and an array of chili so good, it’ll set you free. Men of Christ Church, rise up and claim your inheritance.Sign up here to participate.Women, please bring cornbread, crackers, chips, cheese, onions, or a dessert.
  • Lastly, during the 8pm Christmas Eve servicewe will have one of Austin’s finest ensembles, Strings Attached, as part of our musical celebration of the birth of Christ. Who do you know that does not have a church home, and might respond to your invitation to worship with you at Christ Church on Christmas Eve?

Thankful to be your pastor,

P.S. Check out this wonderful Litany of Thanksgiving for use this week.
