Like an Angel to the Shepherds

Rev. Cliff WarnerCliffNotes

It always comes so fast. We’ve just finished clearing the Thanksgiving plates when the first Sunday of Advent suddenly appears, like an angel “to shepherds out in the field.”

One of the strong and happy memories I have of Advent at Christ Church over recent years is the sight of your children dressed up as a shepherd or a donkey or an angel, laughing and learning their parts, rehearsing for the Christmas Eve service. We have an exciting and beautiful new “pageant,” a collaboration of our own artists, parents and children. There are very few rehearsals, all of which take place Sunday mornings, when you are already at church.I love it that our children have a role to play in leading God’s people in worship.

You can sign up your children (youth too!) and see the rehearsal schedule here.By the way, if you’ve never read it, you need to get a copy of A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving; it’s a great Advent/Christmas read, with a children’s pageant you’ll never forget.

Two quick related notes: first, speaking of kids, have you had a chance to give the children in our nursery a new toy? They need it. You can go here to select an item.Second, we will have two Christmas Eve services. The 6pm service involves the kids, as described above. The 8pm service will feature some glorious music, with many additional musicians and instruments. You’ll be hearing more about this, and you’ll definitely want to bring your friends.

Peace on earth,
