These cannot be grasped and clutched: water, wind and fire. Who can reach out and catch the wind? What can protect us from all manner and force of water when it pours from the sky or presses the levees? Why do wildfires rage for days through the wilderness, despite our best efforts to contain them?
Water, wind and fire; these are the three ways that Holy Scripture reveals to us the Holy Spirit. The third person of the Trinity, often forgotten or ignored, is described with powerful imagery, more easily described than defined. This is the presence of God among us that consumes and refines like fire, washes and cleanses like water and blows through our lives and churches with gentleness and power, unseen but capable of hurricane force.
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, the moment in our church calendar when we recall the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit, who would be the empowering presence of God that scatters God’s people to every tribe, tongue, and nation with the gospel of grace. Join us this Sunday as we focus on the ministry of the Holy Spirit and are drawn further into worship with a multi-media presentation prepared by Christ Church artists.
