We are gearing up at Christ Church for a unique effort in the history of our community. There’s this church in Austin called Church Under the Bridge that meets under Interstate 35 at 7th street downtown. It’s a church mostly for people who live on the streets downtown or within walking distance, but welcomes anyone who wants to come.
I drive by it often when en route from our church offices (which are also on 7th street, a few blocks away) to our worship location on Sunday mornings. I see the people setting up, music speakers, food, people who look like they are from the streets, others who don’t, a hodgepodge of people gathered to love God, love others and serve the world.
Here’s what we are gearing up for . . . the whole congregation of Christ Church is going to worship at Church Under the Bridge during the month of March, divided into fifths for the five Sundays of March. Why? Because we believe that God has called us to the heart of the city. For more than 50 years this community has been located in Central Austin, called to advance the good news of Jesus and embody his love for all people.
Though we will only be visiting for a month, we are praying that God will use this to open our eyes and hearts to the lost and the least of Austin. We will also be taking this opportunity to pray for the needs of our city, for different demographics of the city and for different sectors of organizational, public and private life in our city.
